To used closed lid mode, your ‘Book must be plugged into the AC adapter and connected to an external display and a USB or Bluetooth mouse and keyboard (you might also want to consider external speakers). Power up your ‘Book until the desktop appears on the external display and then close the lid. Your ‘Book will go to sleep, but you can wake it by moving the mouse or using the keyboard. The built-in display will remain off, and the external monitor will become your only display. Since all video RAM is now dedicated to the external monitor, you may have more colors available at higher resolutions.
Note that the built-in display is only capable of 18-bit color, not the full 24-bit color you might expect. Closed Lid Mode: All Intel ‘Books support “lid closed” (or clamshell) mode, which leaves the built-in display off and dedicates all video RAM to an external display. Your system should be able to support the newer OS's (most of the Core 2 Duo systems are 64bit clean). Don't forget to upgrade your current apps as well here (if they are 32bit). You'll need to do a few things here to upgrade to Lion.

Just to elaborate upon a point that Charles Hendrick1 made, I have yet to see an Office document (excel or word) that did not render properly under NeoOffice, and I exchange hundreds of office documents per week with customers and co-workers. Some of these documents are hundreds of megabytes in size. No details have been lost in my experience. I've seen some examples of documents with extremely complex layouts and/or lots of embedded VBA which did not function properly under NeoOffice, though I don't typically see these issues in the kinds of correspondance that I perform; I'd argue that these are corner cases outside of very specific corporate environments (where custom applications have been written using MS Office/backoffice technologies). Not trying to be argumentative here, but this is an inaccuracy which is consistently reported on these boards. Don't dismiss a solution out of hand simply because there is no cost associated with it.
